A New TargetIndividuals of all ages can become victims to identity theft. College students are increasingly being targeted due to multiple reasons. College freshmen are attractive to identity thieves because their clean and unused credit history makes it easy to open new accounts. Most students are not as careful with protecting their personal information and do not check their credit reports frequently or at all so any fraud goes unnoticed.
"College students are five times more likely to be a victim Stories
Ericka, A Sumner County TeacherWhen Ericka left on a spring break trip from college and visited an ATM she had no idea that over the next weeks $200 a day would be removed from her bank account. She stopped to get cash with her friends and lifted up the machine's plastic cover. The covering that she assumed was to protect the ATM from weather was actually a computer, placed there by a thief, that recorded her card information. Through this technology the thief was able to record her account # and PIN. A week later she went to withdraw money from her account and found that $2,000 was missing. Her mother, who works for a credit union knew the necessary steps to take to help her. They tracked down the ATM where the crime occurred. The bank uses security cameras to record ATM transactions which allowed them to get the license plate number of the thief. Luckily, she had insurance that covered this type of theft so she was not liable for any of the loss. To prevent future incidents and stay safe she requested to be put on a federal watch list for unusual spending to keep her identity safe. Since then she has not had anymore compromises.
